Railroad approved – This boot is a popular choice for railroad workers. As a freight train conductor I can find myself in remote areas having to deal with deep snow well into the dark hours. For the last eight years this one pair of boots have held up every time. The Outback is roomy enough for air circulation around the foot yet not loose as though you are wearing a sloppy boot. My feet stay warm without over heating even on the coldest nights. The construction is solid, and the tread unbelievably holds up to miles of railroad ballast being the number one killer of boot treads. I have never had to have these boots retreaded yet, and they still look relatively new after years of use. The Outback has been a lifesaver and are worth every cent I spent on them. This is a ten star boot. Conductor Noel Wilton Union Pacific RR

Great Boots – The first few times I wore these it was terrible. The circumference around my calf was too tight at the very top of the boot. The thick nature of the leather made it painful to wear them quite honestly, as there was no “give”. I greased the crap out of them and wore in short intervals until the leather finally started to break in. I now consider them the best pac-boots money can buy. They fit about as well as my “regular” boots in terms of comfort/support, and are way more supportive and less sloppy than the Sorel Caribous they replaced. These boots are absolutely perfect if you have to actually do much hiking in conjunction with deep snow. The one down side was that the laces frayed pretty quickly. I replaced with 550 cord which has lasted much longer.

Outback – Great boots I have owned them for 5 years and used them for work as I lineman and for hunting. Very heavy duty not as warm as I would have hoped but, very supportive and water resistant. Great work/hunting boot if your moving around. Would definitely recommend and buy again

12″ Outback – This Outback is the ultimate pack boot. It holds to your foot and ankle for stability whether hunting for elk in the high country or logging work in the valley bottom, still wearing the same pair since bought in NW Montana 2009.

My Review – Finish: This boot is very well constructed. The upper leather is VERY thick–thicker than that of any other boot I own (Meindl, Red Wing, Lacrosse). Everthing seems to be triple stitched. The tops of the boots are trimmed with rolled leather. The tongue is a thinner quality leather. The tongue is sewn to the uppers about 2/3rds of the way up. The extra ankle support is made of the same thick leather as the rest of he the uppers. The lowers are a thick rubber. It appears greenish in the photo, but mine are brown. Otherwise, they are exactly as they appear in the photo. The rubber seems very durable. Inside the rubber lowers are lined with a cotton cloth. Insoles = essentially none. The soles appear to be constructed of an upper layer, a fore-foot tread as pictured that is glued and tacked in place. The heel is glued and tacked in place as well. Deep treads as pictured. The rubber of the soles seems to be very high quality. Laces are very long and standard braided nylon. The boots come with 200g Thinsulate liners. Fit and Sizing: Definitely order one whole size up from your usual. Fit perfectly. Plenty of room in toe-box. No heel slippage. I have the 12″ boots. My inseam is 34″. These come to mid-calf. Perfect for what I wanted. Wear: TBD. Have worn them for 3 hours in 15F weather at slow pace on even terrain. Very comfortable and very warm. I’m going to order felt insoles and the 400g liners for these in anticipation of much cooler weather. I treated these with Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP. They soaked up about 2/3rds of the 8oz. jar in the first treatment. As expected the leather is much darker now. I expect they will need at least one more treatment before they will be reliably waterproofed. Overall, FANTASTIC boots. Worth every cent! I’m expecting a couple decades of use out of these.

Great hunting boots – Bought these boots for deer hunts in Massachusetts. We are anywhere from swamp to mountains to salt marshes. These boots kept my feet dry all day and also warm. Great ankle support and traction as well. Put over 35 miles on this week hunting straight out of the box. My feet didnt hurt at all and no blisters. Way better than the neoprene rubber hunting boots I used to wear. I would buy another pair of these in a heartbeat

Exactly what I was looking for – Purchased these boots during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.  I was worried about purchasing boots online but I followed the fitting recommendations and they fit perfectly.  The craftsmanship is top rate, the material quality is top-notch, and the service was impeccable.  I received my boots within less than a week of ordering!  I look forward to retiring my old fall/winter boots and will be wearing them during the more erratic spring storms coming up.  5/5 for build quality and service. A true example of fine Idaho craftsmanship.

Excellent for winter hikes – After a lot of thinking and comparing of options online, I pulled the trigger and bought these about 2 winters ago.  I love them.  I had questions before my purchase, and I actually talked to Jim Hoffman on the phone, who patiently answered all my questions.  Great service there.  For a boot that is usually big and clunky, these are a really nimble choice for longer winter walks in the woods.  I definitely recommend these for cold temperature work, or if your feet get cold easily (get the 400 liners).

Outstanding – Got the Outbacks after a lot of research.  Initially got size 11s (because EVERY boot I own is size 11.). Should’ve listened to the advice on going one size up but an easy return with size 12s and after 30 miles on them I can honestly say that they are the best purchase I’ve made this year. I treated them generously with conditioner several times and put them to work. Stiff at first but never uncomfortable and now they are the best winter boots I’ve ever owned. They make my Sorrel Caribous look like they came from a Cracker Jack box.  Northern Wisconsin deep snow I appreciate the 14″ height and subzero temps aren’t an issue.  Lace em up and go. Thank you Hoffmans, this is a quality product.   Mike Reilly

Quality Made In Idaho Pac Boots. – Just received my Hoffman’s Outback today.  Fit was nice and snug on my feet.  Leather uppers are made of a thick leather thicker than my Schnee’s Pac boots.  Ankle straps give good ankle support plus the sole has aggressive traction on snow.  Overall a quality product at a fair price cannot wait for hunting season to get here in Montana. Ordered this boots last Monday 10-04-21 and received today on 10-12-21. Great customer service from  Hoffman Boots the person I talked to on the phone was very knowledgeable I told her I wear a size 12 in boots she recommended a size 13 and it fits like a glove. Plus I bought  400 gram thinsulate liners in anticipation of cooler weather. For anyone wanting to bjuy these boots just remember to go up 1 size from your normal boot size and they will fit like a glove. Good job Hoffman boots for a good hunting boot shopping experience.

Review is for fit only at this point. Will review performance when we get snow and cold weather.

Fit is on the money for me. I wear a men’s 10 in the Hoffman Explorer 8″ and received a men’s 11 in the Outback 10″ feels fantastic with the 200 liner.
